Geranium Essential Oil – Oil of the Month

Geranium Essential Oil is our oil of the Month

I’m continuing my flower theme for this month’s featured oil.

I’m looking out of my office on this beautiful Summer’s day at our flower baskets of geraniums. This colourful flower is present in so many gardens this time of year and always makes me think of my lovely Grandfather (Pampa) who always grew them and was so proud to show me them whenever I visited.  My Mum still grows them today – from cuttings from Pampa, so they live on in our family.

Geranium Essential Oil

Geranium – Latin name Pelargonium Graveolens – is native to South Africa, but cultivated in Egypt, Central America and parts of Europe.

The essential oil is extracted from the leaves, stalks and flowers and its predominant chemical contents are terpenoids and alcohols; citronellol, geraniol and linalool.

The properties of Geranium Essential Oil

English Rose Bath SaltsGeranium is analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic, cooling and calming to the body, mind and spirit. Its rich floral, spicy and green aroma also has a very feminine quality, and a great affinity to the female reproductive centres.  It can help to harmonise excessive menstrual imbalances and relieve inflammatory conditions including acne, gastritis to eczema. It is very helpful for new Mums for mastitis (it was a God send for me when I was first breastfeeding my kids, I had many a geranium scented bath in those first few weeks)!

On and emotional and spiritual level it helps us to feel both sensual and secure, in harmony with our bodies, with our sexuality and our natural, creative rhythms. It’s feminine spirit nurtures us and tells us it’s ok to be ourselves and to receive as well as to give.  I often think geranium oil is like having a big hug from your Mum, soothing, nurturing, generous and non-judgemental.

The geranium we use in our products is organic geranium essential oil, from Egypt.

It is well known for its skincare properties and can help to stabilise and clear oily or combination skin complexions and is nourishing and re-hydrating for dry and mature skin.

Geranium Essential Oil in Perfume

In perfumery, it is a middle note and a great harmoniser/bridging oil to blend floral, citrus and woody oils synergistically.  It is often used to boost rosy notes and accords in natural perfumes at a fraction of the cost of rose essential oil.
